About Coras Lodge and Mexico Bass Fishing

Explore Lake Aguamilpa — A Big Bass Habitat that is Senic and Stable

Built for hydroelectric power in 1993, Lake Aguamilpa maintains remarkably stable, high water levels year-round. Unaffected by agricultural drawdowns, this consistency preserves shoreline cover and water clarity, creating ideal conditions for producing a healthy Florida strain largemouth bass population with real trophy potential.

The lake’s flooded landscape is textbook bass habitat: rocky points, deep channels, brushy coves, and submerged timber abound. Whether you’re working topwater or targeting deep structure, expect high-volume days packed with aggressive strikes and hard-fighting fish.

Aguamilpa is always catch and release. And, unlike any other fishery in Mexico, Lake Aguamilpa enforces a net-free season from March through June—ensuring undisturbed spawning and an unparalleled largemouth fishing experience.

MEET THE OWNER & Family

Stewards of the lake. Devoted to your stay.

For over 25 years, Mario Guevara, affectionately known as “Big Fish,” has been a driving force in Mexico’s bass fishing scene. As the owner of Bass Adventures Mexico and Coras Lodge on Lake Aguamilpa, Mario has earned a reputation for  delivering top-tier quality service and unforgettable angling experiences.

His nickname comes from more than just a passion for trophy-class largemouth. It’s also a nod to his big-picture vision: building a lodge experience that matches the quality of the fishery. Under Mario’s leadership, Coras Lodge has grown into one of the top bass fishing destinations in Mexico, with ongoing investments in guest service, new lodging, and staff training.

Fluent in English and Spanish and holding a degree in tourism, Mario began his career under the mentorship of bass fishing legend Billy Chapman Sr. He blends that foundation with hands-on expertise, welcoming anglers from around the world with professionalism, warmth, and deep local knowledge.

Off the water, Mario is equally committed to his community—creating local jobs, supporting infrastructure, and ensuring the lodge uplifts the region as much as it serves its guests.

Looking to fish beyond Aguamilpa? Mario and his team can help plan offsite excursions or full-scale adventures to other world-class fisheries in Mexico and Central America. From cultural day trips in Nayarit to trophy hunts on Lake Baccarac or peacock bass expeditions abroad, they’ll help you plan a seamless trip from start to finish.
